What happens when a filmmaker stops chasing a story and simply observes?
On October 8, acclaimed Japanese filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda joins us in Hamburg for a special evening dedicated to the art of observational filmmaking.
Known for films such as Campaign, Mental, Peace, Oyster Factory, Inland Sea and The Cats of Gokogu Shrine, Soda has developed a distinctive approach to documentary filmmaking based on observation rather than predetermined scripts or conclusions.
The evening begins with a live talk, “A Filmmaker’s Way of Seeing,” in which Soda will introduce his approach to observational cinema and reflect on what it means to film without imposing a ready-made story on reality.
After the talk, we will screen his documentary Inland Sea (2018, 122 min). Set in the small fishing town of Ushimado, the film observes an aging community and the rhythms of everyday life by the Seto Inland Sea.
Following the screening, Kazuhiro Soda will return for a live Q&A with the audience.
