Lorde is so back! That was already true a few months ago, when she delivered one of THE key pop culture moments of last year alongside Charli XCX. On the remix “Girl, so confusing featuring lorde”, the New Zealander cleared up a misunderstanding with the “Brat” Brit at her invitation and sang radically honest lines like these: “I was trapped in the hatred / And your life seemed so awesome / I never thought for a second / My voice was in your head / ‘Girl, you walk like a bitch’”. When Lorde performed this part live at some Charli XCX concerts, it was clear to see how many people had missed a musical sign of life from her - her third, very warm, organic album “Solar Power” was more than three years ago.
At the end of April, Lorde finally followed this up with a new song of her own: “What Was That”, which she presented to her fans at a guerrilla concert in New York. Shortly afterwards, Lorde announced her new album “Virgin” for June 27. In an interview with “Document” magazine, she talks about how she wanted to share her rawest emotions unfiltered on “What Was That” and on the album. “I had returned to New York from London after this turbulent time in my personal life. I was single again, had to deal intensively with my body and felt how my understanding of gender had expanded.” On the one hand, she felt at home again, but there was also a huge wave of sadness.
This approach is also likely to shape “Virgin”, which she largely produced, wrote and recorded with producer and songwriter Jim E-Stack. Lorde will then present the new songs live in winter - without forgetting the best tracks from her great albums “Pure Heroine” (2012), “Melodrama” (2017) and “Solar Power” (2021). Anyone who has ever seen Lorde live also knows that this woman not only brings numerous original ideas to the stage, but is also a bundle of energy who feels every second of her concert right down to the tips of her hair.
