Probably every basketball fan knows them and has cheered them on at international matches and championships, whether on screen or live in person: the DBB national basketball team. The abbreviation DBB stands for Deutscher Basketball Bund e. V., which was founded in 1949 and whose task is to organize the sport of basketball in Germany. Only the top players make it into the DBB team and being a spectator at a national team game means experiencing basketball at the highest level. Globally, basketball is one of the most popular sports; the sport is particularly popular in the USA. But there are also plenty of enthusiastic basketball fans here in Germany.
Reigning world champion and multiple medal winner
For most of these fans, watching a match live in the arena is an absolute highlight. The games of the DBB national team are of course hard to beat - the best entertainment and excitement are guaranteed. The great successes in international competitions are attracting more and more fans. The DBB team has already been able to assert itself several times at the European Championships. In 1993 they won gold in their own country, in 2005 they won silver and in 2022 they won bronze in front of a home crowd in Berlin. The men's national basketball team also won bronze at the 2002 World Basketball Championships and impressively secured the world championship title at the 2023 World Championships held in the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia. After the successful 2023 World Cup, the DBB national team once again performed well on the big stage at the Olympic Games in Paris, finishing the tournament in fourth place.
International matches, championships, Olympics and DBB Supercup
In recent years, the DBB team has impressively demonstrated time and again that it is a force to be reckoned with at international level - and more and more fans are appreciating this. More than three million people watched the national team's games at the 2022 European Basketball Championship on their screens.
The Olympic Games and the World and European Championships are of course always particularly exciting, but friendly matches are also extremely worthwhile sporting events. One of the events that is particularly popular with basketball fans is the Supercup, in which four teams compete against each other in the host country Germany. The tournament serves as preparation and a test run for the subsequent major tournaments, such as the European Championship, World Cup or Olympics. Whatever type of game it is, watching the DBB team live is always an unforgettable sporting experience.
